Summer Works Report 2024

Digital Services have been hard at work over the summer!

Here are just a few highlights of the things we’ve been working on:

Clearing & Exam Support

We have provided comprehensive support to the clearing process and provided technical support for examinations.

Mac computer lab upgrades

We have successfully rolled out Sonoma for all labs and updated all software around it. We are working on the new macOS to test and roll out soon.

So far, we have upgraded two labs – ATB2217 and PDW4005 – with the latest iMacs for enhanced performance. We also freed up a lot of hard drive space on lab computers for students for the start of the academic year.

Windows computer lab upgrades

We also upgraded the following labs:

  • INB2209 (Engineering)
  • INB3239 (PGR)
  • NDH1002
  • PDW4009

We also have an exciting gaming project underway to replace two labs and create a new feel for the gaming room in INB.

Additionally, we have been involved in the creation of a new fully-fitted VR room in SSB for Radiology and other Healthcare education purposes.

Asset management

We had numerous disposal collections for digital equipment over the summer to take care of old and outdated devices. As part of our sustainability and compliance efforts, we aim to reutilize devices where possible and ensure that all data is erased safely on devices which are no longer needed.

Audio-visual upgrades

We have completed the upgrade of 21 large teaching and learning spaces (>70 capacity) across the University.

These rooms are: MB0302, MB0312, MB0603, MB1009, MB3101, MB3303, MB3401, MB3601, ATB0109, ATB2203, ATB3116, BH0101, NDH0020, NDH1010, SLB0006, DCB1101, INB1103, HS0.2.01, JUN0005, LMS0005, LMS0008.

The upgraded rooms will now all have the same setup, delivering a similar experience for all staff timetabled to them. The new features and improvements include:

  • Introduction of height-adjustable podiums across the 21 spaces.
  • Autostart of teaching applications (such as Blackboard) to speed up access.
  • Dual monitors to support presenter view as well as having room controls on a separate display.
  • Ceiling-mounted microphones to simplify recording. These will be selected by default in Panopto meaning staff don’t need to worry about setting up microphones.
  • Visualisers on all podiums.
  • Both audience and presenter camera views.
